Research

I began by creating a user flow to understand how users would navigate the application.

I was also interested in creating an application with a unique visual aesthetic, so I created a color palette and laid out my fonts and typefaces before starting wireframing and prototyping.

Design Decisions

I implemented an extensive onboarding process that asked questions about lifestyle, budget, and cleanliness to give users quality roommate recommendations with similar habits. Letting users look at each other's profiles and create bios also helps people determine how well they would match with their suggested roommates. I also added a chat feature so people can talk with one another about their interests and needs in a roommate before they commit to signing a lease together.

In my research, I found that having mutual friends makes people a lot more comfortable when committing to a new roommate. To address this finding, I created a feature where users can share their contacts with Roomies. The app would then compare users' contacts to inform them if they have mutual friends with potential matches. This gives users the opportunity to cross-check their matches with trusted sources, allowing them to have the best possible living situation.
